Rocket Launch Campout

  • Boy Scout Troop 658 Rancho Palos Verdes, CA USA (map)

WHAT: Car Camping at Lucerne Dry Lake to watch the Rocketry Organization of California launch large-scale rockets upwards of 10,000+ feet on Saturday morning and through early afternoon. We will launch our own rockets Saturday during the day and Sunday morning.

WHEN: SATURDAY-SUNDAY, October 14-15. Departure will be on Saturday morning at 6:30 AM (please arrive at the departure point by 6:15 AM). Travel time will be approx. 1.5-2 hrs. Return on Sunday will be around 2:30 PM - parents will be called if we return early. Departure and return will be from Jack-in-the-Box on Palos Verdes Drive North. As a courtesy to everyone else, please be on time.

BRING: Porta-potties will be available, and we will be bringing several water containers. Scouts should plan to bring: a couple of filled 2-liter bottles of water per person, 10 essentials, personal gear, including: layers of clothing, your 658 Class-B’s (troop hat, shirt, & hoodie or fleece), tent and ground cloth, a thermal pad, personal/patrol cooking equipment, tent, and a sleeping bag. At night it could get below freezing so bring layers of clothing, outerwear (warm jacket), a beanie, and gloves. For Saturday bring a sack lunch. Folding tables and camp chairs are highly recommended. EZ-ups for shade are good, but it will be windy so stake down everything (metal stakes recommended)! Shared 3–4-man Troop tents are available – if needed make arrangements with the Scoutmaster/Quartermaster Mr. Miller 1 week prior to the trip.

FOOD: Saturday bring a sack lunch. Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast is by patrol/cooking group. Sunday lunch will be purchased on the way home – be sure to bring $$. REMEMBER, YOU NEED 2 LITERS OF WATER PER PERSON. Adults must bring their own food, cooking equipment and tents or arrange an adult cooking group ahead of time. Remember, you carry everything including trash out with you. This will be Leave-No-Trace camping.

FEE: $20 per rocketeer (spectators are free), plus launching costs (the purchase of a rocket and motors, 3 motors recommended). ORDER AHEAD! NO additional rockets or motors will be available onsite. Food cost will vary by patrol.
