Joshua Tree
"Go Climb a Rock" means so much more than that. Discover what you're really capable of, join us on a Troop 658 Rock Climb!
Rock Climbing has been an integral part of Troop 658's history - we've been doing it for over 35 years, and Troop Legend has it that when the BSA decided to create a Rock Climbing Merit Badge, they based it on our program! Rock Climbing is much more than just going up and down some rocks - it's about challenging yourself to push yourself farther, harder and longer. It's about accomplishing something few other people strive to complete. To that end we've created three special awards to help foster an interest in rock climbing and reward those who overcome it's challenges:
Craig Whited "First 50 Climb & Rappel" Award - Our Beginner Rock Climber Award is awarded when a Scout, Troop Adult, visiting Webelos, or their Akela completes both their first 50 foot climb and 50 foot rappel.
Red Perlon Award - Our Intermediate Rock Climber Award is awarded when a climber has learned the basic climbing, safety, and equipment requirements and completed a combination of moderate and high climbs, rappels, and belays on both the 50ft and 150ft Climbs. Gold Perlon Award - Our Advanced Rock Climber Award is awarded when a climber has mastered all the basic climbing, safety, and equipment requirements and completed a combination of high climbs, rappels, and belays on the 150ft Climbs as well as served as a climbing and safety instructor on additional Troop 658 Rock Climbs. What else do we do at Joshua Tree?
Even if climbing isn’t your thing, our rock climbing outings are still a great trip and shouldn’t be missed. Bouldering, outdoor cooking, and campfires are just some of the things we plan. We also offer bi-yearly training for scouts to earn their Totin’ Chip and Fire’m Chit Awards, as well as host a 3-5 mi. orienteering course as a rank requirement.
Our Webelos Invitation Trips
Once or twice a year we invite 2nd-yr. Webelos and their Akelas to join us for a weekend full of climbing, bouldering, and fun. Not only is it a great way to stretch your belief in what you can accomplish, you’ll also have the chance to check our troop out to see how we run. Not only that, should you join us officially once you’ve Bridged, some of the training the Webelos will have received can go towards their Boy Scouting ranks.
